My name is Len Wiseman. I'm the director of the film. I'm sitting here with Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman. And Kate plays Selene, obviously. And Speedman, I think you were one of the set PAs. Yeah, set PA. I got promoted. That's Speedman right there. - That's me. That's me. Or Michael. Michael. - Yeah, it's Michael. You've got a lovely young back. - I do, really nice little back. So we're watching... This is an extended cut. This is not a director's cut. What it is, It's a version that's put together... ...to show you what's missing from the original film... ...and what had been cut out and what's been changed. And I'll go into some detail, not too boring... ... about why that happened. I like that type of thing. Do you? - That was Nate, right? That was Nate. That was Nate Robinson.
The war had all but ground to a halt in the blink of an eye.
I sound so depressed. You are a bit depressed in this. You're in leather, it's raining, you could fall. It's shitty to be immortal, isn't it? Well, it's boring, really.
That's what my brother calls my bad-gas moment. This one here? Were you harnessed in? Insert sound effect there. - The extended version. You were way up in the tower, right? You were harnessed in? No, because eventually, I didn't. There was some... That's right. That was green screen. - No, it was just somebody else. Oh, okay. You refused. - I didn't. There were some shenanigans going on. Somebody made me feel unstable, and I wouldn't get on it. It is a bit bad-gassy-looking... - It is, isn't it? Now come think of it. We went up there. It ended up being Nicole. That first shot is Nicole. I can't believe she did that, jumped off. She did not. That's a rumour. I totally did it. Oh, I'm sorry. The funny thing is, so many people get fooled by that. That shot that's coming up, they do think it's me. I'm sure it was you. You did it a couple times, she did it once. That's not me. - There's you, in the hoodie. Oh, yeah, I'm brooding in the hoodie. Now, he's a potato farmer, apparently. - Really? He is, from Idaho. - Slash vampire? Yeah, apparently he is. My makeup artist was keen on him for a minute. Lovely strong hands. There he goes. But he didn't speak any English, right? - No. As did, like... Eighty percent of the crew didn't. Right. I mean, you barely spoke English. - I tried. Neither of you speak English. Thank you very much. - Okay. There I go. I really like how she did that. - Good knees on that. They're not my knees. - Those aren't your knees, no. This is where we just drenched you for hours. I was miserable. - The rain machines wouldn't work. I felt like they worked really well. I was soaking wet. All the people running up to you wearing 15 coats... I thought it was still cool that there were rain machines... ...and I was going to get wet. By the end, I was cursing water. I Kept falling there, slipping down. This is like-- Inside the subway was the very first week we did. Yeah, we did that fake set, right? - Yeah. Was that a fake set or a real set? - Wasn't it real? It was real. - No. You were there, weren't you? I was there. It was a subway station, but didn't we build something too? Well, yeah. It was actually... lt was a repair yard for the trains. Then we built that set around the train. - I knew I was on to something. There you go. - Here's love. Immediate love. - Damn it, I have a pimple. Do you? - You don't see that? I see it first. I thought we wiped that out. - No. Oh, my God, it was so tense. lt was so hot in that subway. Yeah, it was brutal. Boiling hot week there was in Budapest before it became arctic. And everybody's in these leather coats. This was the first thing we shot, right? - Yeah. Yeah, this was the second day of filming. The first day of shooting was you in the hospital. Then I came in with those horrible boots and tried to get your approval. Yeah, that's right. I remember I did not want to shoot that scene first. That moment I won't talk about. - No, neither did I. I felt like I'd had absolutely no preparation on firing the guns. They told me, "We're going to do a take." I said, "Oh, my God." Literally almost shook, afterwards. Felt like I'd drunk, like, 20 cups of coffee. I was worried I was gonna get in trouble, because it was a cheap movie. "You have one chance. We don't have money for another pillar." Like, "Oh, great." - You did great, though. No, there was all that stress... ...because we really didn't have a chance to re-squib things. He says, "No pressure, Kate, but we only got pillar with squibs in. The thing's going to be ruined if you mess It up." This sequence is still pretty much the same. Yeah, this stays the same. Here I go, panicking. I remember all this. You did an amazing skid. Did that make it? Yeah, it did. - That was fantastic. But I do grab her crotch, unfortunately. Right. I ass-grab her. - You did that in rehearsal too. She cried afterwards. Is that why? - Probably, it was real claw. She was terrified with this squib. She had never done one before. And she was horrified. - Yeah, she had a real sob after. There she is. I did not mean to. That was unintentional. They're all looking at it now. Remember when we were shooting that scene... ... for you peeking your head out, to get the reaction, I kept firing guns? Yeah. Yeah. I was asking you to do that, yeah. We ended up doing that the entire film. - Here I go. Ass-grab! She was really cute. Everybody was harassing her because of that. Really, everybody was harassing her. - Yeah. But not after my grubby hands got all over her. Oh, my stunt guys. Look. Hank, he's always the one who was, like, pulling. He was my favourite one to pull wires. - Oh, this is where you save me. Thank you for that, by the way. - Kind of a lady-boy.
Yeah, definitely am in this. - Yeah. That's what I said. I felt like the girlfriend in this movie. You're a great girlfriend. - Yeah. Yeah. You don't get PMS. - I don't get PMS. I let you go out at night. - Yeah.
Oh, yeah. - That camera just kind of disappears. You don't tuck it in your jacket. - What do you mean? She picks up the camera, and then it magically disappears. It movie-disappears. That was great. Thank you so much. Thanks for that. Another great stunt she did.
The funny thing is all the running in the little bits. On those heels, I could run, but I couldn't stop, I'd always have stuntmen waiting by the cameras to launch myself at. They would catch me. - Really small space too, relatively. Yeah. - For this. You did a good job. Thank you so much. - Not you, him. Yeah, I know I didn't. I kind of dialled it in. Yeah.
Oh, is this the first change? - Yeah.
Hank is so nice. It's kind of scary. It's weird for me to see him... ...getting more vicious. - Yeah, it's completely different... This isn't the one they kept laughing. No, that was Scott. Didn't they keep laughing when they had to face off against each other? That was the other guys. - That was Scott... Oh, yeah, Scott. When Scott... - This was one of the last days we shot. Thought this was. - Actually, this was the last day. We were screaming through this day. I'm finding one of my fillings.
Where did you shoot this? In that basketball court, right? It was in the basketball court. Up on the top. This was one of the last days. - This was the last day. Len had to be wrenched away from the camera. "Sorry. There's no money. That's it. Gone. Finished. Go home." I Kept shooting, dragging cameras out to get everything. Did they give you extra days? Couple? - I think so, yeah. We ended up getting a few. I don't remember exactly how much. We have to give our first-born son over, though. A shame.
Is that the hole down to the wolves? That's another jump. Cool. That wasn't easy, was it? - That was you. That was me. That was me. - There you go. Oh, I remember that day so well. He falls better than anybody. Look. So impressive. - That does look painful. Yeah. He never has any padding, either. It's fantastic. He didn't do it with back-padding. I used a walk up to him, do that thing, shoot him, then caper off like a girl. Yeah. He would just do that at lunch, in the lunch line. That's my least favourite shot of me. Why? - My nose looks like a big snout. I think it looks cool. - We both were not really... Don't like that. - Why? Because of the snout. - The snout looks great. Thanks. - Nice bullets. Thanks. They're all natural. Of course, that made the trailer, I think, too. I know. I was upset. - The shots you don't care for... ...always show up in every press junket, in magazines, and in trailers. Was that in a sequence where you said I look like I was humping a donkey? I believe that's the one. That was a cool one. That isn't me. That isn't me. - That isn't you. That was that disgusting champagne cellar. We got sick from the mould. What? - Were you in there? Where? - The champagne cellar. It was five inches thick with mould. My God, I got so sick. I got off scot-free. You did. - Pardon the pun, but I did. That really bothered me, that place. The toughest thing for me was the transformation stuff. But besides that, it was... I had a pretty easy schedule. Yeah. We made up for it in the water. - You did. Yeah, yeah. That's true. But you were like, "Hit me. Hit me. Harder," by that point. I Know. I did kind of go insane in this movie. I may be a chick in this movie, but I'm going to take... Yeah. - I'm going to prove it. I remember when we were doing the apartment scene... ...and she was throwing you up against the wall. And you kept going on about how you're not going to get hurt. I know, that last take, there was pain. - Which one? When she throws me? When she pins you against the wall in your apartment. Oh, yeah, yeah. No, I don't remember any pain. Yeah. - No pain on that.
This was miserable, in this location. It was. It was the hardest. lt wasn't the coldest. There was something about that spongy mould. It was actually nice to go from... Because it actually went in order. We went from the subway, which was unbearably hot... ...to this cellar, which was... - Full of fungus. Yeah, which was pretty cold. It just stunk, and it was miserable for everybody. I thought the locations were hard. Weren't they? Yeah, they were. I guess locations in general are usually pretty hard.
What to say? So many things to say. I Know. They were such nice guys. I think Rich looks like Jesus. - He does. Oh, he's scary. - Got a couple Jesuses going on. Do they have to be completely naked? - They weren't. They just rolled their knickers down, didn't they? Do we not say "knickers" in America? - You can say knickers. lf you're a 5 year old, you say knickers. Michael looks fantastic. - Yeah, he does. There is a bit of a Jesus theme going on there. You can see... - Look at that. You can see... How come in this cut--? It might just be... ...we're looking at something else. - They were really embarrassed. That is embarrassing. Gotta be naked in front of... It's not so much the naked. It's the wet perm that would bother me. They do have a bit of a wet perm. Here's the famous driving scenes. - Yes. Can't operate a bicycle. - ls this where the car wouldn't work? No, I couldn't drive. - No. We had to give her the basic lessons... ...of where the steering wheel is, where the gas pedal is. And don't I have pneumonia here? That was the day I was... First day I was back at work after getting pneumonia. Oh, nice passive smoke for me, there. This guy was great. - Yeah. What's his name? - Robbie Gee. Robbie Gee, that's right. He was great. Scott McElroy taught me everything about guns I know. Right on the right-hand side. - Yeah. He was the good cop to Brad Martin's bad cop. Till I found out Brad Martin is really nice.
Now, was this the first day of--? - Dialogue. First dialogue scene we did... - No, no. No, it was the same set. It was the... Firing range. - Weapons-firing thing. This just took forever. There was just a lot of people to cover. None of us were really very good. Is that what you're saying? I remember it being so-- All of us madly negotiating those teeth the first time. It took about... - Oh, yeah. It took everyone three or four days. I can really see it, and everybody's: Well, everybody-- A lot of people kept licking their front teeth. That girl never stopped chewing gum, that girl with dark hair, Death Dealer. How she managed it with her teeth.... Well, she didn't have teeth. - She didn't have teeth? No. The people that didn't talk didn't have teeth. They just chew.
You really see Sophia's teeth. I don't know if she had the battle things in... ...or because we had two sizes of teeth. When? When she's on the roof? Yeah, when she's on the roof, we have those. But I think, just-- It shows up on some people a bit more.
Like, I can barely tell you even have teeth. Because I have huge teeth in life. That's why. You're used to it.
Viktor would believe me.
Half the time, I did forget to put them in, to stop...
I'd never treat you like that. - Of course not. Now run along and make sure she's dressed and ready for her guests.
Is her character in the second one? We allowed to talk about that? - Yeah, we are. Erika is-- Erika is not. - No? Am I? - I haven't read it yet.
That's a set, right? - Yeah, it is. That's a location. - It's actually our house. It's the guest bedroom. It was cool. I thought that was really great there. That was a cool set... - That was the basketball place, right? The basketball court, yeah. - I had so much fun on that set. It had good karma, that set. - Didn't it? Wasn't it great? It was really fun. I was just pissed we couldn't actually play basketball, though. You did. - You played basketball everywhere... They had that stupid Huffy. That's not a basketball court. I wanted a basketball court. I went outside of town. Outside of town. Outside, like an hour and a half. Yeah, the bellhop in my hotel... I Kept walking out with a basketball. lt wasn't the basketball. Know why the bellhop liked you? lt was the short shorts. Those were not short. Those were basketball length. They were like... - They were not! He comes out in these, like, Richard Simmons shorts. Those were real basketball shorts. They look the cover of a Wheaties box. Maybe I wash them too much. Those are my favourite pair. They were good, stretched-out. Those were MJ basketball shorts, Michael Jordan's. He doesn't wear short shorts. - Well, you do. Well, okay. I'll have to get a new par. He took me outside of town to go play in this league. He kept driving me out into the country. Did he say there'd be puppies... I got scared. It was an hour and a half away. It was pretty amazing, though, that I got to play. I had a similar experience looking for a bikini wax. An hour out of town, there's a woman with this rusted bucket... ...and no teeth, wax in it. Who's that? - Who is that? That's Kevin. - Oh, greased. And he was just terrified. - Of what? Of having his shirt off. - Really? Yeah, he was-- He was.... You'd get cranky when people had their shirts off. One day, I had my top off. That was the day you were mean to me. Me? - Yeah. Wasn't that in the bathroom? - I was excited. What are you talking about? - You were cranky and punishing. That was for something else. That had nothing to do with your shirt off. Had to do with you taking a break when I was... ...three shots behind. - Please. lt was because you'd had me around for 17 hours. And my child was feeling like an orphan. Did we go over a lot? Like, did we... I can't remember. Did we have 15-hour days and stuff or not? We had-- It felt like it. I mean, we had a few of them. But it's not as bad when it's a night shoot. I don't know why. It doesn't feel... You're not waiting to get home to do anything. You know that when you're off... . It's dead. It's not like you're trying to go to the store. Speedy in the hood. - Yeah. I like it. You did like that hood. You wanted to keep it on. He's like me. If he could possibly be in a movie underneath a bag.... Yeah, I'd rather it. Desperate to get my hair in my face so no one can see me. The fact that you're showing both eyes is a miracle. A miracle, I know. I was glad I didn't have to wear this dress that was on the hanger. He's attractive, for a human. How can you tell I'm attractive? - It's that strong jaw. It is, I guess. It's the hood. You can tell.
You got off lightly with the costumes. - Me? Yeah, you. - I had one. Well, then I got screwed. Why? - With my second costume. I remember some producer trying to get him into a beige cardigan. What was it? - Yeah. Yeah. That was the first time I ever met you. That's right. Horrifying. - Yeah, I think Richard had brought in.... We were talking about how much rain there was going to be... ...and all of that. And so he comes in with a... I think it was a beige sweater from... I think it was, like, a Gap sweater. I wasn't liking it. No offence to Richard. That was quite funny. We used to have meetings about whether we should shave you or not. We still do. - Oh, we did. What, shaving my face, my head? Do you know we had conversations about that? We did the test. We did a test, you still had the scruff... But it looked stupid. With the lighting, it didn't look right. I agree. No, actually, I remember, because we... - You couldn't decide. You were so damned attractive. Because we went up to my room, and we checked oult.... We checked out that tape. And there was some younger pictures of you. Oh, yeah, those horrifying... - No, you looked nice. I think I didn't decide to actually shave your beard until the day... ...of the first-- The first day. - Pretty much. Who's that? What's going... - That's your best friend. Have you seen this movie, Scott? - Who is that guy? What was his name? - Oh, him. Erwin. Erwin. - Erwin Leder. Loved him. - Erwin, the set poet. How do you pronounce his name? - Leder. Yeah, it is, right? - Yeah, I guess. He wrote, like, three poems a day. He did? - Yeah, he did. Did you read them, ever? Well, a lot of them were in German, so I had a good try.
He gave-- He gave you... He gave you a few poems, right? Most days. So did you.
There's a thing I should be talking about. There's certain things that are... There's shots that have been cut out... ...that, really, a lot of them were taken out for just pure pacing. You never want someone coming at you with those gloves and that expression. Yeah, I can't really see anything that's that different. Is it small stuff? A lot of stuff, you're not going to notice... ...because you fell asleep during the premiere anyway. He's going to wake up now, because he's on-screen. And most of the stuff that's cut has... Nine times out of 10, it's because I didn't like Scott's hair. Well, that makes sense. - Yeah. It is kind of unruly. Oh, Forrest.
He said you did a terrific job tonight with the surgery.
Yeah. Do I confess or not? Go ahead, because it was quite a bit of a problem for me. This actor here. Well, first... - This actor is such a nice actor. This is one of our deleted scenes... ...where Scott goes in to check on the gunshot girl. What's the story? - The story is, this lovely actor... He was such a nice guy. He was there for a short time. - Couple of days. Wentworth Miller. - Wentworth Miller. I happened to have gone to school with a boy called Forrest Wentworth. So I constantly called him Forrest Wentworth when I was referring to him. And it just messed everybody up. She would refer to.... She would talk to me about Forrest... .all the time, to where I would go up to Wentworth, and I swear to God... I may have just, like: "Forrest, can you take two steps?" "What are you talking about?" I don't think he knew that pretty much everyone on the set... ...Was constantly trying not to call him Forrest. Yeah, all your fault. Kevin with his G-string. Where? - He has a G-string... ... Just to hide the package.
Death Dealers, three of them.
You see, I just... That voice is incredible. - She thinks the voice is fake. I think he has a voice like Mickey Mouse... Everybody thinks his voice is fake. It is not. I have known the man for a good seven, eight years. I remember... - And if he is putting up an act.... Well, it's not an act. It's not... It's his voice. Lily was four, and I remember we sat there, and he said: "Hello, pleased to meet you," and Lily's eyebrows, like, shot up. It's a shocking voice. - "What the hell is that?" It's an incredible voice. She was more surprised by that than by meeting the werewolf. Oh, did you ever let her see them? Yeah, she hung out with the stunt guys, which we still have to deal with. Yesterday, she said to us: "Can I be shot out of the cannon?" I'm like, "Damn that Brad Martin." - Yeah. But no, she was fine. She went up, and she said, "Why have you got no underpants on?" You hooked her up on the wires, right? - Yeah, she loved that. I liked that. I liked doing all the wire stuff. Yeah, so did I. I think you did the most takes... - Probably. ...on the wire stuff, because you would not let up. No, I like doing it. - I would let up. No, you'd just do it right. - Oh, thanks. Hey!
Must I do everything myself?
It was funny at the end, Michael had his beard off... ...and his extensions out, and you'd walk right past him. I did. I didn't recognise him at all.
This scene, this was.... I think we can talk about this now. This was something that.... We were actually looking at... ... having David Bowie be in this setup at some point. What happened with that? - It-- Time. What made you not be allowed to write to him? Because there was no time or something. lt was just a time factor. That would have been cool. - And then we heard later... ...that, I think we heard, that he would have been interested. Oh, I hate things like that. - Yeah. It's not nice. Well, you Know.... Things happen. What can you do? That's the car that sucked. Every car sucked. - No, but that was... The car didn't have any guts. - That's scary. Look at that. I still have my fuzz. There you go. You can check it out now. - That's right. Isn't that your parents'--? - That's my prefix... ...to my hometown phone number. You know every number in a movie is 555? Whenever you see a number... Yeah. Everything is 555. - Why? Not every one, but 99.9 percent. - Ninety-nine point nine. I don't understand the movies that get away with it. Why do some--? Just in case they show it actually on camera. It's someone's... lf that's somebody's number, you can get sued. So nobody's number actually starts with 555. That's interesting. - Not really, not that interesting. Yeah, thanks. - I had ice-skating lessons as a kid. You had what? - We had ice-skating lessons. I did that stuff, shit like that. Yeah, I was blowing up action figures in my backyard. Putting, like, ladyfingers on Boba Fett. There's Forrest. - There's Forrest. Forrest is so muscular for a little intern. He is muscular. I think that the stunt guys now dressed up as cops look like strip-o-grams. Now that we've seen them permed-out and naked. I expect him to take off his hat and undo his... It's a little Chippendales. - Big boobs sticking out. That's my actual family. - Yeah, so these... Now, did you arrange this, or did you have them call your--? There's Ildiko. Look at my hair. I got permed-out. I had no idea you had a fling with her. - For a couple of hours. I got pictures from my family. Il\diko said you acted strange during that shoot. What? Really? - Yeah. No, I didn't. - She's gonna kill me for saying that. What did I do? I didn't do anything. Strange how? - What do you mean, "strange"? Twitchy and... - Well, you are twitchy, anyway. I think she just didn't Know you. I expect that now. He's twitchy. - That's an awkward thing. Pretending you're husband and wife with somebody you don't know. You're an actor. - Yeah, but for five minutes... ... there was a photographer. It was with the set photographer. Why does he have red nose? - Why do I have a red nose? Because he's happy. - You were bleaching out the colour. Do you remember the first time that we shot that scene? When we actually shot it, it was.... The recording was Danny McBride on the voice machine... ... Which threw you, and you couldn't concentrate. You kept laughing. - It sounded funny. Oh, you can run, mind you. Good at that. Yeah, but I hurt my knee there. - Yeah, you did. You slammed into the wall. - Yeah. This is where I actually got hurt. I got dragged. - You could not run in that jacket. Oh, God. No. - Who could run in that jacket? Or those shoes. - It kept getting caught up in her boots. Some of my friends... This is their favourite bit. I can't understand why they haven't gotten me. This is a great Sequence. I love this sequence. This was my favourite sequence. - Because you're shooting at them. Yeah, but the corridor doesn't seem so nearly that long. How about all this time, looking around, flapping my hair. Oh, I cried after this. Why? - Well, they said to me: "There will just be a little gravel flying up. It'll never go past your knees." I literally got glassed in the face. It was just... If it's hitting camera there.... - It was shocking. I thought, "Oh, my God." And I was thinking: "Please let me not be registering the fact this hurts." I had to go off and, "No, it's fine." Go off and quietly sob for about 25 seconds, and then I was fine. Did you do that with a lot of scenes? - No. Well, yeah.
I still have a scar from this. I hated this day. - I remember you hurt yourself. Getting you to pull Soeedman out of this elevator. That's when they dragged me along a nail here. Your leg got caught up on some board. But there was a nail sticking up or a corner of a tile. And those crazy contacts too. - You couldn't see out of those ones. Yeah. - Yeah, he was completely blind. I don't think I could have gotten those in my eye. Hats off to the guy. You had big ones. - Yeah. I hear you have big ones. - Yeah. That's a rumour. - Sometimes. Only sometimes. Oh, my God, and all this stuff here, when we were outside. You and me, to be out of breath, just running and running. I remember you started the whole running-around thing. Yeah. - I got a call from your agent... ...before I even met you. He said: "I want to warn you, Scott kind of runs around set before he shoots a scene." But everybody does if they need to be out of breath, don't they? You run around a set after you shoot the scene. I run around not just to be out of breath. I'd run just to kind of get some energy out and kind of get loose. I don't know, it's weird. - You went flying over that car. I was freaked-out that I'd broken you. - Oh, yeah. Yeah. I love this shot. - What song Is this? What's that? What... - Speedman said a bad word. I'm the only one that swears. - I know. I tried to say "asshole"-- Oh, this is so cool. I love this. This is the famous carpet thing, right? There he goes on his carpet. - A magic-carpet ride. It looks great. - And that was half of Todd Schneider. This. - Yeah. That's Todd right there. That's so dangerous. Michael did the jump onto that, right? Michael did the jump, and Todd did the run-by. Oh, this is where we were reacting to nothing. And this where you refused to scream. You said, "I'll do itin ADR. I'm not going to scream on the day." Remember that? - I didn't think... I still didn't think the character was a screamer, But I was wrong. That'd be kind of painful, though. I'd give it a yelp. I think it's healthy for a child to have her parents... ... sort of stabbing each other through the hoods of cars.
I had fun on this day, actually... - This was fun. When we had the walkies all set up... - This isn't a wire though, is it? No, Michael didn't do any wires. No, but I mean... - No, this is a trampoline. That's so great. - Cool shot. This is one of my favourite bits, this sequence. This sequence Is my favourite, yeah. Get your own favourite shot. He's pissed. He did the whole Michael Jackson walk. He walked away after that scene... ...and did this Michael Jackson move that I cannot find. I was going to put it on the outtakes. He was quite good. Yeah, he can move. What does that mean, "Michael Jackson"--? This scene here. This... - This was late... Well, we recut it, and it was.... So it looks like she's just deaf. You have to lean forward and say.... Okay. Wasn't this where I was in between takes madly coughing up a lung? Yes, I think so. - And you're like, "Oh, are you sick?" Were you smoking a lot then? - No, I had pneumonia. Remember? Right. Yes, I remember.
I'm not screwing around! - Neither am
I! This is the scene, too, where just... I actually wasn't very happy with just... Oh, thank you. - Not you guys. Just, the order of how you pass out I think is a little bit strange. I thought it worked well. - I was a bit iffy about this one. Me too. - It was just strange. Oh, shut up. Is this is miniature or real thing? - This is a miniature. That's very clever. And I like that you play with dolls and toy cars. Thank you. And I appreciate that you make that Known to everybody. I would actually like if you'd stop calling them "dolls." What dolls do you play with? - They're not dolls. Lily goes and says: "Len plays with dolls." - What dolls? What are they? - Action figures. Lily doesn't say "dolls." I'm the only one. She corrects me. Yeah, you try and get her to... I've gotten her to say "action figures." That was the very last thing I ever did on this movie, was that thing. This? - And I was out. Was that frightening, to have that bucket of water come? No. - You're lying. Do you remember this--? - This was a nightmare. Yeah, this was horrible. This was the-- I hated that. - I hated it as well. The water was warm. And underneath there was just horrible as well, sandy. Then, didn't I have to straddle you? - Yeah, that was... Which is not in here. - Oh, it was funny. We edited it out. There was supposed to be sunlight coming in. There was sunlight coming, and she's creeping away from the rays of light... ...So has to manoeuvre over Scotty and straddle him... And it was written like a real porno. And so when I'm lining up the shot, it was embarrassing. And I had misunderstood "straddle." I had some English notion of straddle... - What did you think it meant? I don't know, but it was something that was really unattractive. It got nixed. Is that why you were, like, gyrating?
He's got a great face, Erwin. - Yeah. Sure does. - You don't agree with... I agree. - You're agreeing just to agree. He actually does. It's not your opinion. It's a fact. It's fact. It is a great face. Erwin, great face. Michael looks fantastic with the long hair. What do you think, Scotty? - Absolutely. Absolutely fantastic. - I think it's a really nice vial. Great glass vial. - I love that vial. Always have, always will. Seriously, the hair was a genius move. - Are those extensions? Yeah. - Doesn't look-- They look good. They're Hungarian extensions. Those are the best. - Best kind.
Soon, he will come looking for us.
He does look like Jesus. - Yeah. It's a bit Jesus. - He's been told that before.
I'll stop. I'm into this. I feel like I haven't seen this. You haven't. - You slept in the premiere. I left. I didn't watch the premiere. I had to fly somewhere. I'm not good at sitting around. This is all pretend, isn't it, darling? This wasn't really happening. This is the what thing? - This is pretend computer stuff. Yes, this is pretend computer stuff. That is? - Yeah. Isn't that just liquid and water? No, it's... - Very, very expensive swirly stuff. That's exactly what that is. - Really? It's not CGI, it's... - Yeah. What Is it? It's swirly, fake computer stuff, as she explained. Okay, all right. Just trying to get a hold of what's going on here. What movie is this? - You love this shot. Look at me. I mean, look at me. That is the worst. I look like a bug-eyed git. - You love it. You weren't very thrilled with it. Oh, look at that corpse. - The shadows were not working right. It was the only shot I had. - Thank God she sat up. I think this is unclear. Thank you. - No, I'm sorry, but I do. But it's quite a good shot of Speedman there. I didn't Know I was on camera. - None of us did. That was at the premiere. - That was actually at the premiere. That was after a long evening. Oh, I'm dreaming. Where am I? Who are you? - Oh, I've got that top on. That looks good. - What didn't make sense? What didn't you think made sense? It's not clear that the wound is healed, because the shot... You can't really see the... - She's right. And I think it's not clear why I've changed into a leather thing... ...with the frill on the bottom. It felt like a black-leather wedding outfit. When I stand up, it's got a ruffle. It's horrible. Very shiny. What's going on there? - I'm wet. You're sweaty. You just had a violent dream. Do you see that? You're very good at all the sort of gasping and panting. Well, it's all the running I do. - Very good at that. There was two bits where we did the passing-out thing... ...Which I actually thought was a bit weak. By me? - Not by you, no. By just... It's all right. You can say it, man. - No, you pass out really well. What am I, passed out again, suddenly? That's what I mean. - You pass out too much. Well, I was tired, man. I was tired.
He wants to see you. Now.
Is this different? - Look at those eyebrows. No, this isn't... I don't think anything's really been all that different. A lot of... Hold on. - Well, then why are we here? A lot of it's in the third act. There was a lot of stuff that we cut out. Third act. - Like your whole back-story. That thing. I don't want... We don't gotta watch that. Yeah, we are going to watch that. You say that now. You cried. - I did not cry. You cried. - I told you I was fine with it. ridiculous theory.
Lucian wouldn't be a bit interested in a human....
I had a crisis that day. - You did. Sounds like there was a lot of those. Was there a lot? This was a confused moment. You look really nice. Just gotta say that. I look good in crisis. That's why I do it so much. Actually, the hair's not bad. - Hair looks good. We had a running battle with my hair. My hair was okay that day.
I'm going to go for maybe a buzz cut in the next one. I kept saying that. - Shaved heads. Hair was a problem, getting it out of the eyes, and I was fussing with it. I got a perm there. I strategically placed that hair so she'd move it. I remember all that crap. Now, this bit is a lot of people's favourite. It is. - When she sticks to the ceiling. Really? - Yeah. You're so surprised. - Neither of us are really in it. I'm not really in it, so it couldn't be anybody's favourite bit.
It would be a surprise. - It'd be scary... .S0 it's kind of a funny reaction.
All right, here we go. - That's it, jump out the window. This is my favourite thing, I think. No, it isn't. - This isn't it. It can't be. You are nowhere near it, Soeedman. - There we go. Dogs! Dogs and everything. You're really good with the "Oh, shit" look. Here we go. I was legitimately scared with these dogs. Oh, come on. They were being whipped into a frenzy by these Hungarian people. I love how you fall down. I loved it in the trailer. You gave me a hug after that, because I worked hard. Remember? I did. - You did. I was... You were good. - I was big on the hugs. Weren't you sick that night, Speedman? No, I was... - He wasn't sick. He was a baby. He was sick. - I was the opposite of a baby. No, you were. - He was sick. Sorry, guys. He was totally sick. - Were you sick? I don't remember. - Well, I do. I was keeping a detailed notebook and diary. That's right. Maybe I was sick. But, hey. What you don't see after this shot is you put the gun down... ... flapping your hands around. - Why? Because the impact of the guns. You don't remember that? - No. That didn't happen.
I Kind of miss those guys, those guns. We've now got paintball guns at home... ...and Lily's now got really scary water pistols. You've bought quite a few different kinds of guns. Really? - Yeah. Paintball guns, squirt guns.... - Potato guns. Ever seen a potato gun? - I have. I've never heard of that. That gun can really sting in the neck. Yeah. Who plays with those? - Me. She shoots me in the head. She plays with them, and then you play with your dolls. It kind of is like that, actually. Yeah. - Yeah?
I remind myself of my mother in that scene. Doesn't that look like Jude, the shaking of the hair? Throwing the hair back? - Yeah. I mean, "So have you bought toothpaste? Is it time to make a list of things you haven't done ever in your life?"
I've never underestimated Kraven's lust for advancement... ... but Viktor believed him and that's all that matters. Where you going with this anyway? - Nowhere.
Rain. Rain. - Rain. Rain shower. Now, will that be the case next time? No, it won't. I really don't want to have a lot of rain at all. There's actually gonna be beach scenes? There's gonna be a lot of snow. Oh, perfect. - I think snow's gonna be... Fake snow. - Yeah. That's cool. - Snow's not as... But, if you use the-- You like that? That sounds cool. - Thanks. Depending on what kind of snow you use. Some snow is actually quite lethal. A lot of people getting throttled... - The close throttling. A lot of fetishes coming in. Black leather, throttling. They're gonna find you dead with an orange in your mouth one day. So there is a lot of throttling, with the throats and things... ...and then, there's more opening doors in this film than any other film. I heard that. - What do you mean? People explode through doors and close doors. Especially Kate, just busting through about, probably, 12 doors. I could do that. You do that in the house. - I do. "What the hell is going on?"
Without me, you'd have nothing.
Listen.
There should have been a sinister laugh there. I love evil, sinister laughs. Those are the best. They're so funny, man. Michael should have belted one out. - If anyone could, it's him. He definitely can. See, we just bashed open one door. I was quite feeble in this one. It took a wee bit. Well, remember you kept locking your wrists? Like a ballerina? - Yeah. Those days are gone. - Gone. What's that? - No idea. Where are we? - This is a movie called Underworld. It's about vampires fighting... I'm glad you didn't make me blow dust off it. Wasn't there a movie we saw where... ...someone blew dust off five things? It irritated me. No, don't say what it was. - Yeah, I won't say the movie. What was it? - I'm not telling. Screw it. It was poor. - It was a poor movie. There was a lot of... - Dust blowing. Dust blowing. - Yeah, that sucks. Did you draw these, babe? - I didn't draw these. No, I didn't. - You can draw? I try. This is an extended scene. Let me talk about this. Okay. I'm not in it, so... - No, this is actually... ... Just goes into depth a little bit more about... ... how the Lycans were taken as slaves, and you see the branding here... ...and how they were all... - Why wasn't this in? It's cool. It's pacing. It was just taking too long... Who's Korgel? - Yeah, who is Korgel? I think he was, like, one of the transportation guys. And it shows that everybody-- Like, with the actual brands that, you know... ...Lucian has the brand of... With a V in it, so he was kind of... as a... Like Viktor's cattle, of sorts, so... I think this should have been in. This is cool. I agree with you. - Yeah. That's helpful. This is an extended version, ithas some stuff... ...that would have been in a director's cut... ...but then also some stuff that's in here that... ...was taken out for good reason. - I really like this. It looks thick for skin. It is, and looks like Play-doh when it's ripped off. Now, who's that? That is Lucian, who's in this movie called Underworld that.... I didn't see his head, man. Did you get a script? - Yeah, I read it. We don't know Lucian, even though we've seen him. It's him. He's got that necklace. So I'm just wondering... I mean, I know... lf you were asking me, I would have said Lucian, but I wanted to know. We're coming out with an animated version for children. You can get that. He only read his bit. You know that. - They only sent me my scenes. This is good. I like this. - This movie? Yeah, it's good. - You should maybe rent it. I should rent it. It's funny now. I get really... - Protective? In Blockbuster, some guy next to me was deciding whether or not he was... ...going to buy Underworld or Pirates of the Caribbean. And it really makes me quite nervous now when I see stuff like that. What did he buy? - I actually had... Pirates of the Caribbean. - I actually had to-- The good thing is... I said, "Oh, I would kind of go for that one right there. That's a good one." You did? - I did. And he said, "You know, I would have bought it... ...but I've rented it three times, and I should've bought it the first time." So that was good. - That's cool. Look at you exposing yourself. There's Forrest going in for the kill. Look, there's, again, there's close, close talking. This is the very first day for me. For everybody. Do you remember the conversation about repeating the lines? Me? - No, just with anybody. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then I did it. Did I do it? You did it once, and I said I liked that. When I do it, it's great. - You can pull it off. No, but I actually like this scene. I actually... No, I think this worked well. It's because I wasn't there. - You can tell it's, like, our first day. We don't look tired and... - I was really stressed. That was stressful. - It was the first scene I've done. lt was a really small set. Everybody was, like, crammed in. lt was a tense day. Everybody was there. That's always a tense day, but, for whatever reason, it was extra tense. Between reels, we were talking a bit about the Internet. And apparently, Kate found a site where it's discussed in a forum... ... that's discussing whether or not Len Wiseman... ...iS the worst person on the planet. - What? Based on what? And I say, "Yes." - Based on what? "He's a liar, a thief, a coward, a highwayman, something." How does he know you so well? Who is it? They're talking about whether-- It's, like, listing about, "He's a coward." Why would they call you a coward? - Because he's a big, old fraidy pants. But no, seriously. Did you read on or just turn it off? We read on. It's actually a bunch of... - They said he poses like a gangster. I pose like a gangster. - That is quite humourous. Sounds like a lot of jealousy to me. - It's a lot of jealous 16, 17 year olds. I thought it was all true. - Did you? This was the day you were mean to me, babe. Why were you mean? Because she was slowing down our day. I was not. - No, I don't even... You slow down your own damn day. - I don't even remember. I think there's a few witnesses to that. - Well, that's true. That's true. I know what it was. - What was it? I had arrived at 6 in the morning, and you wanted me to work through... ... Without lunch until 4, because it was convenient to you. But my child arrived three hours before, and I was... ... feeling a little bit like, you know, "Could I please go see my child... ...for the half-hour I'm promised?" - No, it actually... That's what it was. - I was not aware of that. You may not have been aware, but you were still an asshole about it. Crap. - There's a certain way that a movie... I feel like the child of divorced parents, I really do. I'm not aware when people eat lunch. That's the AD's thing. I wasn't talking about lunch but about parenting. Sometime, I'll take you through how a movie set operates. Oh, like you know, Mr. One-Movie. Oh, crap. This does not fare well.
I remember, this was... You know, stare at this and watch it do absolutely nothing. Yeah. - I think it's cool. Was that when we were up high, and I was gonna push--? Yeah, this was all... Because this had to be... ...eight feet below the ground. This was built up on a stage. I think we were about 17 feet up. - There's always people going: "Only six people are allowed on," making it sound really scary. Yeah, shouting, making everybody really nervous. And you loved your hair this day. lt was a Nancy Reagan do. No, I know what it was. It was the Butterfield 8 head. - Yes. What's Butterfield 8? - I have no idea, but it sounds funny. What is it? - Isn't it that Liz Taylor movie? I don't know. - I don't Know either. Yeah. The man in the booth is saying yes. Thumbs up. Thank God. - Thank God. My gay friends will still soeak to me. To my knowledge, an Awakening has never been attempted.... Looks a bit like a baby crib. Don't really like that shot. - Who is that? Me. - No, I Know that's you. Yeah, she plays Selene in this movie called Underworld. Who's in there? That's-- That would be... Viktor. - Viktor, right. I thought he was in a cage or something. Like, in the glass thing. No? - That's some other film. No, isn't he behind something...? I'm wondering. Right? Your script page had numbers on it? I'm being serious. He goes into the glass thing, right? Yes, eventually. Once he's woken up, then he goes behind the glass cage. I've watched the movie. I Know what's going on. I'm not saying I don't know. - Which is quite clear. I do Know what's going on. I just want to talk about stuff, and what exactly... Remember, this was a... You actually could not stop laughing... ...because they loaded you up with blood.
A bit long, this. - ls this extra, or was this--? Is this extra? - No, this isn't extra. Oh, this is cool. No, I mean I remember thinking it... Yeah. How have you done this? With all your computer stuff again? I don't remember sunsets and grass in that bit. It's all stock footage that we were trying to put on a little bit of... I don't remember that from the movie. - This is cool. Was that always in, the sunset and grass? You guys should watch this. - For God's sake. We have. Just don't be so goddamned sensitive. I love this speech. I was upset with you, but when you did this speech... ...I was really quite happy. I don't think I care. - Oh, no. I'm so tweaked right now. Are you naked? - Yeah. And he was mean while I was naked, which is an unforgivable crime. Why did you have to be naked? - Because I hadn't been so far... ...and so it was time. - It's time to be naked? I'm washing my hands, so I took off my entire suit. You're always naked when you wash your hands. That's true. Were you looking into the camera right here? Boom. No. - No? I never Know where the camera Is. I can't see... That's true. - ...a damn thing without my glasses.
That's-- I believe that's... - Cranberry. IIdiko. It might be. Or it's the other stand-in. What's he doing there? - Who is that? He just showed up to visit one day. But he's checking you out. - Who is that? Is that Scott McElroy? - Yeah. I always want to call him a friend from Toronto, Scott McCord. It's McElroy. Scott McElroy. - He goes by Forrest too. Forrest McElroy. I still don't believe I actually broke his nose. You did. - You did, actually. Did I really? - Yes, you did. The first week of training. He didn't tell you in case itt made you gun-shy. You broke his nose, and then you.... - Really upset me. You kept hitting... - What? I did not. No, you didn't. - You kept hitting... Yeah. I did hit those guys. - Gunther. But those guys are... lt wasn't Gunther. Irritating? - No, they're not irritating. Asking for it? - It was like, they never said... They're so great, they just don't ask you to pull back a bit. So I'm not good at that, pulling back. We're cold. - What the hell is going on? It's so cold, and my hair is wet again. - And the scary dogs. This is a new shot. - It is? Yeah. - Shiny, shiny, shiny bottom. That was a new shot, but this is all... - This is the same movie. It's the same one, called Underworld. - I know what movie it is. This has been rearranged just a little bit. There's a few more shots of Erika here. Kind of building up that she's a part of putting this whole... ...you know, this... - You look like one of the Monkees. I really do. It's a little... Just kind of a scary shot. You loved this shot, right? Who? - Kate did. No, because of the Butterfield 8 hair again, right? Yeah, we had that whole hair thing.
There was discussion about adding a scene where... ...Kate's in front of a mirror with just a razor blade... -... just shaving her head. - Wow. The hair was becoming a problem. - That'd be cool. I think it'd be good, do the Sigourney Weaver... SO people can say you're ripping off Alien as well Matrix. That'd be great. - Brilliant. Do people say that? - Yeah. Oh, far too many, because it's a black suit. You know, what are we gonna put a vampire in, like, fuchsia? You know what? - Number two.... It'll all be pastels. Look, I warned her. I warned her, but she didn't listen. I should've told you sooner. - Told me what? Her human, Michael... ...he's not a human at all. He's Canadian. - I'm Canadian. What? Canadian? - No, not another Canadian! Jesus! - Get them out of the industry. Stunned. They'll kill you. That was the one I was terrified was gonna be in the preview. Was it ever in the preview? - The, "Who are you people?" Yeah. And it was. We knew it was. There's certain lines, when you're shooting, you know... ... they're gonna be used in the trailer. I Knew that when Kate was saying, "The war between Vampires and Lycans." That's right. And that was. - Yep. This looks complicated. This was a nightmare. - Walking with those things. Walking, there's guys on top that are.... The prop guys are trying to move that thing around on top to mimic him. He was so great. - He was so cool, man. Yeah, he was. - He was such a cool guy. Is. I guess he had the toughest makeup, right? He had six hours every morning. Leave us. But he was great. He was like the visiting rock star. He's so cool, man. We love you, Bill. - Bill, we love you. I wanted him to come to the premiere, but he didn't come. We wanted him to sleep over, and he wasn't interested. I was interested either. Werewolves. There we go, right in the trailer. I'm glad we did those flashes. It's always really difficult to have that scene where it's... "These are aliens," or "These are"-- - It's a tough scene. It's tough for the normal person. So you just kept that bewildered look... ...and I threw in some inserts there and really helped you out. Thanks, man. - You're welcome.
No one's ever survived a bite from both species. By rights, I'd stop the car and kill you myself... Why are you helping me? - I'm not.
Because you're so cute. And Canadian. - You're Canadian and blond. I love that scene. - Really? Yeah. I think you did a great job. Oh, thanks. Thanks, man. Yeah, I was very happy with that. With both of you. That really is some makeup. My God. I felt so great on this movie. I had the shortest makeup call of everybody. All the boys had to come in before me. lt was so unusual. Well, I didn't, not until that last week. You were always having your nipples painted blue. No. - Had to get highlights. I don't have highlights. - Blond streaks. No, no, I don't do that. Remember I asked you? Early on, I thought that you did. Everybody does. - He does! I do not. - Please. Oh, my God. I swear to God, I do not. - I'm sick of this. And those are natural buttocks too, right? No, those-- That's fake. No, my ass Is fake, but my hair is real. - But his hair, I mean, come on. ls he--? What? No, that's a belt. - But he's basically in a skirt, isn't he? Yes. - I love that. You are so weird. You so don't look like a guy who'll design, like, a man-skirt. Yeah, it looks like he's got... I would wear a man-skirt. What's wrong with that? Without the makeup... - I do think people... ...when they meet me, they think I'll be some Goth with eyeliner. I did. I thought, especially with your name being Len Wiseman... ...I imagined you having a shoulder-length mullet... ...and a lab coat. Like, a white lab coat. Thank God I changed and got a haircut before I met you. Did you ever have mullet, Len? Do you like it right now? - Yeah. That's not a mullet, though. I had a mullet in high school. I didn't know I did, but I guess I did. Because it was behind you. - Yeah. I see pictures now and realise it's a mullet. You also thought I was Jewish. - I did not. Didn't you? - No, everyone else does. Why? - I thought you'd be about 52, though. Len Wiseman? - Len Wiseman. It's like a butcher's name. Maybe. What's going on here? What's happening? This is-- Thank you. This is another added scene. This was cut, again, for pacing. It just shows, again, that... ... she's involved in this plot, just helping it along its way... ...to get Kraven a bit more pissed off with Selene. That's a new shot as well. I always liked that shot... ...but couldn't fit it in. - You were in the position... ...of having to shave and shave stuff out of it, right? Yeah. I mean, we got down to where every second was counting. How long is the movie? Putting a stopwatch to us to take out things. I think it was-- Man, I don't Know. That's a new shot right there too. That's actually Nicole. Yeah, I don't recognise that. I don't remember being there. Where was I? Was I sick? - You went home and... You were never planned to be shot... ...because it was just gonna be a car pulling up... ...and then, since she was in the suit, we had her do the walk. It was cold in this set. - This set was cool. I love this. I really had a good time with it. You were sick. - You were very sick. We stopped one day and didn't film it and came back, right? No, we didn't. We were going to. We stopped, because you came down with pneumonia... ...and we ended up having to build this set on stage. Yeah. That's right. - All right. That was so fun, when we did it on the stage. Yeah, it was. So this-- Where was it? No, this was actually on location. Yeah. That was that freezing, freezing... This is when you were, like, coughing and hacking after each take. What are these for? Lycans are allergic to silver. All the women on the set walked past that tray. They'd be like, "Damn, I must get a pap smear." Why is my nose so red? You know, it's becoming a theme. - I think it really is. I look like a semi-coke addict or something. It was cold in there. It was cold, but I didn't know it. I didn't know. I'll get your back next time. - Please. Didn't I? Pull some hair out of your nose? That's why my nose is so red... ...because I kept getting her to pull hairs out of my nose. It's because you're so blond... ...and the way you had your head, it was twinkling. I really-- You know, I'm not good at cutting all that stuff. Somebody got ahold of it. Your eyes were watering up. Yeah. This is the same, right? Yeah. After-- There's a scene coming up after... ...oelene talks about her family and everything. The scene that we originally cut of... - Oh, yeah. ...ocott, when he's telling about how he got into... My back-story. Your back-story. Everything that builds and... I like that that was in Budapest. ...and kind of creates your character, we decided to cut. Did you put that back in? - We put it back in, yes. So we have the pleasure of it now? - We do. We should have some silence... - I don't think we need to. I think we can just talk over it and talk about how my nose... ...isn't red or something. - And it was-- It was a couple reasons. One, it was pacing, because this scene... ...it took a long time, and... - Scott, you were boring. People were kind of falling asleep, including Scott himself at the premiere. I wasn't even at the premiere. - Oh, even more committed. Well, I was at the premiere, but I left. A serious reason why we did cut it is... ...because it came right after Selene's back-story, and so it seemed like: "Here's my weepy story," and he's like, "Yeah? I've got one to top that." Actually, you were very good. Yeah, that's how it felt too. I mean, that's what it was. It was like, you Know, "Yeah'"-- - It was like a sort of AA meeting. "My name is Selene, and these are my problems." That's fine. There's his tunic. Look at that. What is that? You guys have a problem with that? - It's a man-skirt. He gave me the strength to avenge my family. Since then, I've never looked back.
I saw your pictures.
Who is the woman? Your wife?
This is anew scene as well. Is it? - It is. I always...
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to place my faith in you, my friend.
Just telling him that-- Just knowing that things are kind of screwing up... ...and he has to put... Because we had to explain... ...Why Singe was following you to the mansion. And why was he, again? - I don't remember. What's that? - Oh, shut up. Okay. - So this is-- Here we go. This is.... This is the new scene, here. - This is one we only got two takes... ...and you liked the first, and I made you do another. You were a pain in the ass about that. I remember. I think you were like, "This is cut." You did that with a lot of things. - I know, but I only did one take on this. I would be completely happy and say, "Okay, this is good." And Scott would just be torturing himself. I just like to do... - Drive me crazy. Well, sometimes that's the best one. You say you got it, and you have one just to do. Not with you. - Not with me, obviously. As much as it makes you feel good, I used take one of everything you did. No, you didn't. - No. No, you didn't. - Actually, in all seriousness... ...I did love this scene. I thought you did a great job. And I fought for quite a long time to keep it in... ...and the biggest reason was pacing, because it is the longest scene we cult. Your chin looks fabulous. - Because the lighting is good. And it was great hair. - Good harr. I was sad to see it go. - It's good to have you back, Scotty. No problem. - Now it makes sense why you got... ...an American in Budapest. - Oh, yeah. But we never said it was Budapest. You're right. It's not supposed to be Budapest. What did you say? "I just came here." You just keep it ambiguous, right? Yeah. He's non-specific. We were having a discussion about whether Scott is throaty. Oh, please. - I am throaty. I'm not saying I'm mad. I'm not terrible in this movie. I've been worse in other things, throaty-wise.
That's a bit throaty. - "
Have you?"
Thanks, Len. Thanks for putting that back in. No, I did really love it, and so I'm glad to see it's back. Thanks, man. This is a new scene as well. Again, a lot of stuff... Oh, hello. - Hello. Where was I that day, babe?
lt was so-- It was the most fun I think I've ever had... ...making a movie. Everybody was so great. But it's not a film set I would be dying to be naked on. No. - For so many reasons. What do you mean by that? - It was freezing. But I don't know. I would have felt really funny about it. What film would you feel comfortable about being naked on? You know, more comfortable. There was something giddy about the whole thing. You felt like people would have just laughed at your ass or something. All right. - You know? Sophia was... - Horrified. Quite horrified. - She was? Yeah. - Did she have--? Was covered--? Yeah, it was covered, and... - That's good. Which makes it difficult. - This was so hard for me. This was hard. This was difficult. He was showing me some outtakes, the number of times... ... you and I were cracking up. You can't make me kiss him in the second one, or I won't get through. Every kiss, there's about 12 takes of you guys laughing. I had so much fun with you, I must say. I really did. We had fun. - I had so much fun. I would have more fun if I wasn't looking at my watch. It's got to be tough. But we did laugh a lot. We were laughing. We were laughing. There's something, when you had the gun... ...and you would do that Charlie's Angels stunt. My God, I still laugh about that. That's me trying not to laugh right there. Well, in the outtakes, that's what you're... Yeah. - We had it tough here, a tough time. You kept getting "silver round" and "single round"-- Now, what did I say? What'd he say? - What'd he say?
Yeah, that could be a real problem. Now that I know you better, as well, how am I ever going to look at you? Here's the scene that was cut... This is something I think... - What's she got on? A flesh-coloured bra? - Right now. When you're watching at home, you're not gonna see.... We're watching something that doesn't have the letterbox. I don't understand. What do you mean? She has pasties. - Yeah. And so they-- You can actually see them in this cut. But once everybody watches at home, like now, they're not gonna see that. What does that mean? You digitally removed pasties? No, no. It means that the letterbox.... The black bars on the top and bottom of the frame... Oh, I see. Right, okay. - It's within that frame... ...So you're not going to see it. It's cut out. But we did. We saw them. - We did. You knew that was going in the trailer as soon you saw my shiny bottom. I told you that day. - Yeah, I was so pleased. I think I even apologised upfront to say... ...that this will be in the trailer. - Why would you apologise? It's an ass shot. - Yeah. It also shows the mansion. It's also a dynamic shot. But if she was wearing a coat, it wouldn't be in there. Okay. Well, all right. If you wanna get all cynical about it.
My lord. She's here.
She looks good there. Nice. - Rejection. And see, this scene was... You know, you get to see why Erika... ...was a bit pissed off at the end. - Right. It was just a subplot that we had to let go. Does he hit you again in this scene? - No, I think I hit him. Oh, right. It's a really interesting movie if you check it out, Scotty. I've only seen it once. This is like a re-watch. It's very exciting. Look at that forehead. It's like Easter-fucking-Island. Come on. I like that shot right there. Look at that. Brainiac.
This is my favourite scene. - This is your favourite scene? Yeah, babe, you're not in it. - Do I show up at some point? No one's even thinking about or mentioning you. That's a new shot too. - What is that? I really like this shot. It's just something I grabbed... ...when we were doing this scene. - See, you say "grabbed" all the time. Me? - That's one thing you say a lot. What's wrong with saying "grabbed"? - Nothing. But you said you didn't, and I said you did. Well, you're right. - I am.
I love how he did all that. - I know. Me and the makeup artist, we spent... I still Know the whole speech by heart. "
One awake, two asleep. That's the way of it."
I've been lost without you, my lord. Constantly hounded by Kraven and his never-ending infatuation.
So pretty, babe. Oh, thanks. I got a hug after this scene, huh? Yes, you did. - And Bill. I never hugged Bill. - Well, he was sticky. Yeah, he was a little slimy. - Bill's not a hugger. I think he would be. - He would be if he wasn't... He was stymied by that makeup. - ...seven hundred years old. Not a natural hugger. It's a new thing, men hugging to say goodbye, hello.
"The necessary skill." - Yeah, and, like, how twitchy he its. Probably based it on you. I watched the behind-the-scenes stuff with my contacts... ... which, I'm getting an operation. I'm getting that Lasik surgery. God, the amount of time that I'm... - "That's the way of it." "Marcus' turn to reign, not mine." It's like going to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The coven Is in danger, and Michael is the key...
I love that bit. The Lycan. Please.
Give me the chance to get proof you require.
Fine. What? - Excuse me? Booking a hair appointment. She's like Mystery Science Theatre. What is that show? I don't know. - He's got a bit of a runny nose. What is that denoting? I don't know, but I kept it there. It looked pretty real, though. A bit of a dewdrop. - It is a bit... I think it's.... You're tearing him apart. He's got no pockets for Kleenex in his man-skirt he's wearing. in place for a good reason... ...
and they are the only reason we have survived this long.
"Not be shown an ounce of leniency."
When Amelia arrives, the Council will convene and decide your fate.
You have broken the chain and the Covenant! "Must be judged!" I love that your eyes well up with tears without, like, me having to cut away. You see that as he's talking to you. I love that scene. Now, what was challenging about this? This was not a happy day for all of us. Why? Do you remember? Wasn't that the first day I was back after the pneumonia thing? lt was stressful that day, because I had so many things... I think you weren't happy with the red carpet. That's right. - Why didn't you like the carpet? That it was red. - It was red. It was really red too, I guess. - I guess I wasn't really... I don't love colour all that much, and it just was really red. Jarring? - This day, though, here, I had fun. You didn't know it was red until you got there? There was nothing you could do? - I didn't Know how red it was gonna be. I wanted it more of like a... - I see. This was all, like, up in that corridor, right? Towards the end. I had fun. It was a fun time. Yeah, so we're actually back from a break... ...and you will notice Speedman is not with us anymore. He had to skip out. He has an audition. - He has an audition. He wants it, so we can't hate him for it, because it's something he wants to do. I wish him luck. It's something with the Olsen twins... ...and I don't know what the name of the film is. I think it's set in Paris, and he wants to do the whole thing, right? Yeah, he's been talking about it... ...and I know he's really excited about it, so we wish him luck. Since it was his dream job, we decided not to be mean while he's not here. No. - Anyway.... I hope he's reading with the Olsen twins, just to.... Anyway. Why was this funny? There was funny things about this. Well, that was the shot that Danny McBride had done. I tease him about it, because I think it was the most takes that we had done. There were 19 takes of that gun falling, and I used take one... ...and I give him a hard time about it. It's a beautiful take one, though. It is.
That's our job. - Not anymore.
I wasn't here for any of this. This is when I had pneumonia, huh? No, we shot a lot of the film while you had pneumonia. Actually, it helped our schedule a bit. - Yeah. This was a really, really frustrating day. There was about-- It seemed like I had about half an hour to shoot everything. And I wasn't there. - No. Everything's so much more stressful when you're not there. Scotty McElroy.
Oh, and you weren't here for this whole... Were you very glad, because the other babe was there? Yeah. That helped take some of the pressure off... ...but the-- Well, actually, this whole costume, we had a "wardrobe flaw"... Her whole boob escaping. - ...aS Janet Jackson would say. Poor you. Poor baby. - I rushed in as soon as I heard. Yeah, you're really good like that. How have you done that? That's CG, right? That's CG, which I don't think you've even seen yet. We shot that practically, and it just looked horrendous. It looked like three blind mice kind of popping up. And this was all a reshoot that we did. - Oh, really? Yeah, this was all back in L.A. We had a good time. It was just blood and guts. That's me throwing the paint across the window. Oh, is that you? - Yeah. Can you do a bit, like, when my coat flaps around, you're flapping it? That's the prop guy. - Very hands on. Yeah. What were you thinking right here? - "Is it nearly lunchtime? Should I buff my bottom? Am I gonna worry about my camel toe?" Remember how many people were on camel-toe watch because of that suit? No, it became "CT." I would just yell out, "CT," and, "Okay!" There were four people who made it their mission. This is new. This is a new shot here that's just showing Speedman... ...dreaming about the Olsen twins. And so we had some flashes that were supposed to happen right there. This is in the original. Coming up, there's a section where Viktor takes out some of the implants... ...and you see him unhooking himself from that stuff... ... that we had cut out of the original. This isn't it, right? - Yeah, this is. These shots, though.... These, I did all those in post. None of those shots... We didn't take any of the lights down. lt was something we did as an afterthought... ...and just darkened it to make it look like all the lights went down. It actually worked okay. I was worried I wouldn't catch it. I didn't have my glasses on. I couldn't find the takes to put on the outtake reel, but... There weren't that many, because I'd been practising like crazy. Oh, it didn't show. - Oh, really? Look at that. Yeah, look at that. Look at that now. - I was so proud of that. lf someone throws something at me, I tend to duck and wince. The amount of windowpanes we had to replace in the background.
That's new as well. Just a few shots here and there to tie things together. Who's that? - That's Erwin. That's Singe. This shot is new. And who thought up all those names, like Singe? A combination of Danny and myself, and some came from... ...when Kevin and I were working on an early draught. Singe, I think, was Danny's. I think the only one I had was Selene and Michael. You were responsible for Selene? - Yes, I am.
So this is new as well. And I kind of abandoned this scene... ...early on, and I put it in now just to show that... ... he does unhook himself and gets out... ...and so it kind of makes a bit more sense. But.... He hasn't gone Hollywood. He doesn't have an assistant. That's why it's not in, right? Doesn't have somebody to help him out. I would've actually shot it a bit different. I had different little props at the....
Is this new? No, it's not new. I was really happy with this. - Yeah, I think it looks great. Did you know we had a day to shoot this? Yeah, I remember the whole drama of all that. I don't remember this train. - No, that's new as well. A lot of this stuff was cut out for pacing that we put back in. That's not you, as well, is it? - No.
That is. I remember you making me go up and down about 400,000 times.
That's cool. All that running. Everything where she was running with the cape... ...turned into an absolute nightmare. It doesn't flap like it should, that heavy leather. It was always wet. We'll change the coat for the second one. Maybe a short anorak.
I really liked that shot for some reason. l've always liked it. I like it too. I think it's just, because It all stays in one... ...and just, the decision is made, and the gun comes out. It's a cool shot. What people don't know is that, I mean, like on this day... ... you guys can barely be able to keep a straight face. Because I had to shout, "Get down!" I expected him to dance. This is when you guys were doing the whole Charlie's Angels business... ...and really taking the day seriously, which I appreciate. I took everything seriously except Speedman. There goes Brad. We thought he was gonna die doing that one... ... falling into those cardboard boxes. That was a dangerous stunt. Yeah, it was, and because the alley was so narrow... ... there was a lot of talk about... I guess there was a fatal accident... ...on Vampire in Brooklyn, where someone did a similar stunt... ...and had more space than what we had there. And slammed into a wall or something. - And hit the other building. This is where Speedman decks Mike. He really punched him right there. That Mike can fall like that... And I would talk to Mike. He wasn't telling Speedman. I don't Know why. I don't know what was going on there. But he said, "He keeps hitting me in the nose." Speedman had already broken one nose so far. That's when I hurt myself the most in the movie. That was my worst injury in the movie. Running to the window. - You hated the two-hand thing. I didn't like it either. - What's it called? Weaver. Yeah. For we had established it in what Nicole had done with the stunt. And so we had to match to that. - I felt a little cheesy, like a Miami cop. But it really hurt. I slammed into the window. I had a huge bruise. You wouldn't believe me. And then I mentioned it to Shane. There's Danny, the writer.
Any luck? - False alarm.
That's another person I laughed at.
Amelia should have arrived by now. - Yes.
And you never considered popping up in your own movie, huh? Early, early on, and then I always chicken out. Your mom would be so happy if you did. Oh, that's my mom. Now, with everything that's going on, my mom is: "How come you're not-- Are you gonna be going on Leno with Kate?" "No, Mom. Just be glad that half of my face is in most of these pictures... ...at the parties and what-have-you."
Oh, you weren't even around for all this. This was a bit of a nightmare as well.
I think these guys did great. - Yeah, they did. I thought they did really well. I really liked the way they played it. When I was shooting this-- Scott is so good at just the whole transformation... ...and being out of breath and in pain. He was really good at portraying that... ...to where I would call "Cut" before I was done, because I would think that... "We need to just give him a break." - He's in agony. Fuck him, though. He's not here. - I hope he does well on that movie.
Now see how many parties we invite him to that he's not gonna show up to. It's over. There's gonna be a Speedman rift.
I remember when Speedman first called me. He was really nervous about how much of a wolf he was gonna have to be... ...because he'd never played anything like this. And the conversation was all about, "Lam gonna have to roar?" When we went to the creature shop to get fitted for our teeth... ...and you were in Budapest, they made us, for the photos, roar. I was so horrified, and Speedman was even more horrified than me. Yeah, I think they had Guy Himber... We laugh about it now. I think, to get him into it, they had him crawling around or on all fours... ...IS the story I've been told. It may or may not have happened. And it just freaked Scott out... ...and he thought that's what he'd be doing in the movie. I like the little slow-mo thing there. The what? - That little slow-motion thing. Yeah, a little bit of Mountain Dew that we used in the syringe. Was it? - Yeah. All the blood was cranberry, right? - Yes. I'm really picky about blood. The colour, once again. It needs to be, like, a dark, almost brown, brown-red. I hate blood that looks like Kool-Aid or is a bit too bright. This is a new scene. Oh, yeah. I haven't even seen it. Was that longer originally? It was just to let the audience know he was actually calling for Selene... ...and that he's a bit nervous that he has to confront him... ...and let him know that he's screwed up once again. I sent for Selene. Bill's great. I had such a great time with Bill.
She's defied your orders. "
I'm the rock-star vampire."
Your incompetence is becoming most taxing. It's not my fault. She's become obsessed... ... thinks that I'm at the core of some ridiculous conspiracy. And here's my proof.
I thought that worked great too. We pulled Singe, Erwin, on a wire. We did a lot of those takes too... ...because it looked a little bit too much like we were bowling.
Oh, yes. I'm not gonna say anything. That was a funny day. - Strange noises came out. Not from me. - No. God, no. As the shoulder was squeezed quite hard. When you strain sometimes, and you're making, exerting this painful cry... ...sometimes those cries just come out in other areas. But not from me.
Just in time to watch a plague ravage his village.
I was hysterical during this scene, wasn't I, from that? Yeah, you were. - I was the only one that heard it.
Somehow, his body was able to change the disease... ... mould it to his benefit. He became the first true immortal.
Actually, he had me really squeeze him hard. Do you remember? Yeah, I think we have it in the outtakes too... ...and he was wanting it to be much harder. I have huge hands. Look at that massive hand. You have massive hands. Your hands are bigger than mine. What is with that? Mutant. And your feet are.... Just so dainty, right? - Yeah.
It's a ridiculous legend. Nothing! - That may be....
I think you arranged that hair yourself, didn't you? Oh, I always arrange the hair. We gotta figure something out for the sequel, some kind of moulded shell... ...some helmet that looks perfect, that doesn't move. I might do that Olsen-twins movie myself. Well, it sucks because there's so many elements in a shot... ...and the fact that the hair makes you do the shot over is really frustrating. But if the hair falls in your actor's face... ... you just can't use it. And it was just an ongoing battle. Did you ever let the art department do this... ...or were you busy all over this thing as well? No, I let them do it. For these shots, I would arrange it... ...and just pick a bunch of stuff off and put it together. They went crazy around the office. Actually, the first attempt to do that bulletin board... ...which I said should look like some really creepy homicide board, was... They went and took a lot of pictures of people in the production office. You actually see people at drafting tables. And other people are kind of looking and smiling into the camera. And I said, "It's supposed to be surveillance photos." It's a little bit too chummy. - Yeah, a little bit too aware. You've got a guy with an illustration of a crypt set in the background.
The Corvinus strain allows for a perfect union.
And this scene, actually, too, this Singe-- This reveal is also new. In the original cut, we.... Just because of... ...an attempt to make it a bit more clear... ...and a bit more simplified, we chopped it up. And so this is restored to its original version... ...which I believe is a touch longer. It needs those little things as well... ...because it's quite difficult to follow, I think, all those people. It's a lot at once. And I think it actually plays better this way. This is one of the things that I did really want back in. This is new as well. Just little bits that kind of connect the dots... ... that we thought we'd just take out. It's all about timing. It's pretty brutal, I think. Every movie, you hear that on acommentary. That, "This was taken out... ...because of pacing and trying to move things along, and".... It has to be 17 minutes, and so... And it really, unfortunately, it has to do with how many times... ... they can run a picture in a theatre, because if it's a certain length... ...that means they can get one more show per day. That means they can make, obviously, more money.
Not before you. - No, wait. Wait. You and you alone will know the truth of this.
This was a difficult thing for, and for me, anyways, to block out. There was so much to be told. And just to arrange it...
...where everybody was, and to not make it look too silly... Because in a wide shot, this looked just strange, the whole arrangement.
half-Lycan, but stronger than both.
We played with whether the gun should be at his temple... ...at the back of his neck, and just, what looked a bit ridiculous. Here's Danny again. And what's his character? It's got a name, hasn't it? Mason. - Mason. Which is one of the agents we were working with at ICM at the time. Actually Michael Bay's dog's name. - Mason? And Vasilios. Yeah, that little short one that looks like Mark Hamill... ... IS actually my makeup artist, a very close friend. You've lost him already, right? - Lost him. And in fact, everybody has had some kind of morph change. Between those two shots? - Yeah. They bled her dry. lt has already begun. This is quite gruesome, what happens next. I remember finding that really quite gross. And it actually was more gruesome. There were some bones and fragments that actually bounced off the camera. And you can't see them that well... ...because of the timing that we did, and it's so dark.
I really like this scene between you guys. I had a great time every scene with him. He's fabulous. It didn't feel like he was there long enough.
It's little bits and pieces here and there. This is new. I just took this out originally, because I thought that it was... ...feally kind of hitting it home too much about... ...the blood leaking into the tomb and all that, so....
Poor Scotty. Well, not anymore. - No, you know what? Forget him. He should look like that guy from A-Ha in the movie. Oh, and I gave him such a hard time, because once this gag comes down... . it just started looking like a scart. He looks like Morten Harket from A-Ha. And then you made me kiss him as well. And we just kept singing A-Ha songs on set. And you knew all the words. - I did, with the little dance. Go and see what's keeping Raze, will you? I love how, like, posh and dignified Michael is. You wouldn't expect the Lycan leader to be this well-spoken British person. I thought that was a really good move. - Oh, no, I loved it. There he goes. Now he's pop star. I
need to get back. There's no going back.
This is one of my favourite scenes in the movie as well. I thought that Michael did an amazing Job. He's brilliant. Again, like I said, I was talking in the other commentary... ... there are a few scenes that, they'll play out better than what you imagine... ...when you're stressing about them at the midnight hours... ...when you're gonna go shoot the next day, and this is definitely one of them.
Your war, it has nothing to do with me.
My war? He's so in control of it. It's really great.
I think it's just cool. I like the idea of presenting this bad guy... ...and then you just have a complete change of heart for the guy. And we actually had to fight. We had to fight to... Early on, when we were going through a lot of the story development... ...there was a push to keep Lucian just a full-on bad guy... ...and make Viktor stay an ally to Selene... ...and have Lucian just be the evil bad guy. Oh, that sounds so interesting. - Yeah.
Who was that girl? Is she a Hungarian girl? She was Hungarian as well. Interesting day's work for her, huh? Just scream and-- She actually was laughing through most of it. Nobody took my movie seriously. Everybody's laughing. I think he looks fantastic. - Yeah. It's a nice shot. I love with the hair down like that.
He did great there. And there's the whole whipping... ...and his reaction to that was so much more brutal than I was picturing... ...and I thought he did such a cool performance. It's tough, because when you're yelling out... ... that scene could either go well, like it did with him... ...or it could turn into a Rambo moment. But then you get the good actor. - The slow-motion, shaky-jaw Stallone: "No!" What's this? Is that new? No. I don't recognise all those gargoyle things.
This transformation here was, like I said, was something we shot. We shot this whole back-story in a day... ...and you'll see that transformation was basically an edit. And we had already decided to take out the transformation... ...the effects sequence that we were gonna do. And I wish we actually stuck with it... ...and had the money to keep it in, but there you go.
They forced you to watch her die.
Oh, we gave him such hell about that scarf.
That's what started the war.
He'd try that, though. He'd try to get the scarf and maybe a little piece... ...of jewellery or whatever. - He'd come out... ...of the wardrobe trailer, "And what do you think about these bracelets... ...and these earrings?" I was like, "I don't think it fits with your character." He liked that pink spectrum and the fuchsia. Remember when he kept coming out... He wanted to wear the eyeliner... ...and with the eye shadow... - Which would've looked so dumb. No. Like, "Scotty, nobody else is wearing lip gloss." So.... And also, remember, he wanted, like, the really blown-out hair, like...? You know, he wanted his hair longer. Yeah. He had this obsession with the whole Dukes of Hazzard... ...and getting that very.... Maybe we shouldn't out him like that. - Of course I should. His own daughter. He was a chick in the movie, and he didn't get any of the cool chick stuff. I can understand him being upset. - No, I can too. He'll have a pocketbook next time. He'll come into his own in the sequel. He's gonna have Hello Kitty accessories head to toe. Nice pink boots. Great hair, though, right? - Yeah. It was worth fighting with him on that one.
We have company. I
thought we had a deal. - Patience.
I love how he does that too. It just makes it look like this guy is just irritating and not going with the plan... ...and is able to talk down to him, but in.... No, he's got a fantastic authority, don't you think? Oh, yeah. He absolutely does. The interesting thing is, truth be told, he does look young without the hair. And he's also a bit shorter than Kraven. And like I said, when he shaved his beard... ...and took out all the hair extensions and everything... ... he does look a lot younger. And I think it's a great look on him.
There's no defeating him. He grows stronger as we speak.
And that is precisely why I need Michael. This was freezing cold in this location. - Where was that? Remember, this was when--? That place where the ceiling kept falling in. Where the ceiling on this... I think it was this day... ...we're in this really, just... This abandoned steel mill. And the support beams holding up parts of the roof, and... It was a condemned building. - Yeah, it was falling apart. Once, the ceiling started to cave in, and they rushed everybody out. I think I got a free shooting day out otf it. Did you? Didn't it smash onto a truck? lt smashed onto the sound truck. Yeah, it did. So I'd get the PAs to run around when I was running behind schedule... ...and start smashing the ceiling so I could get an insurance day. This was all practical. I was really happy with that. And Shane was a definite pro for letting that explosion just rain on him. Yes.
And if you had done your job, he'd still be in hibernation.
Where the hell is Raze?
This is my hand here. I think I talked about this already. What? - This is my hand doing the insert... ...Of him putting the UV bullets in. Have we had it, or is it coming up? - No. Is this you? - Right there. So I'm in the movie.
I actually wanted to cry when you kill Lucian in this movie. I think you're so invested in Lucian, with his whole story and everything. I thought this is the most moving bit. I thought, "God, you cannot kill him."
Silver nitrate. Bet you weren't expecting that.
Terrible business, that. I found that really upsetting.
Scotty!
This was so unbelievably gory, when I first got to the set in that place... ...and they had limbs, severed limbs everywhere. Do you remember? We had to take some of them out. There were so many. That shocked everybody, because I Knew how much we would see... ...because I know what my shots are, and I knew I'd see it here and there. But when you're on the set, and the actors show up, they think: "Holy shit, what kind of movie are we making? Is this Freddy vs. Jason?" I remember you staggering over that rubble, picking up heads and elbows... ...and then getting rid of them. - It was cool. No, you freaked out that day. Freaked out? - You were like, "My God." You'd had a nightmare with the art department... ...or the prop department. And the set was a bit different than you'd expected. And it was like, every other step, there was a torso. I go, "How many can you get?" Do you not remember that? I do remember there was a lot of... Well, no, no, no. I Know. I freaked out because there were so many skeletons. There were, like, bones, and it looked a little bit like a cheesy horror film. Which it isn't. - Thank you, babe. It's not. - Very convincing. That was a new scene that we just passed by right there... ...with Kevin coming in, and see that he was bringing Amelia's blood to Lucian. Oh, is that him?
So in the original one, he doesn't find him there? He finds him here, but what we were just talking over a second ago... ...when he comes in, and Speedman's hooked up and singing an A-Ha song... ...and leaves him there. And this as well. Again, just a lot of little pieces, going down these stairs... ...and all this stuff was cut out of the original, for good reason, I think. Run here, run there. Yeah, I had you guys go up and down those stairs... Because I didn't know, exactly, the geography of the underworld... ...when we were shooting that, I didn't know exactly what was on... ...the first level and second level when we were shooting. It's so random. And so I just had them do every version. I'd have Kate and Scott run up... - Run about. ...with guns, run up without guns, run single, run, you know. Lip gloss, no lip gloss. - Yeah. He practised for so long, those whips. - Oh, yeah. I remember, Scotty, he showed me... ... his whole whip routine at his apartment... ...1n the parking lot, and it kind of sold me on the idea, he and Danny. With the transformations that you have, I still get that fear every time I see it: "Oh, God. It's gonna be cheesy." And then it isn't. Because we've seen so many cheesy werewolf transformations in films. You did a really good job with that, because it's not at all. I was really happy with how they turned out in the end... ...because I wanted it to be shaky and look painful. I didn't want it to be smooth. I was telling the guys to try and make the transformations look... ...as much like an animatronic effect as possible. Actually, if it looked like there were guys in there with bladders and.... "Bladders"? - Bladders. What's a bladder? Come on, you know what a bladder is. Every woman knows what a bladder is. No, basically, It's a.... How can you toss a bladder in and not explain yourself? It's a balloon that, in the old days, where they'd have a transformation... ... you'd blow into them and make the cheeks and everything expand by air. They'd inflate these bladders. Stop saying bladders. - Do we have to take a break... ...because I said bladders? - I have to pee now. You have to dismiss yourself? This is a new scene with you. Again, cut for pacing. Again, it's just wandering about. I thought it was just... I remember you making it, and I ran up and down that thing so many times. Another one. "I'm not exactly sure... ...S0, again, 16 different versions of running about." I'm glad it finally got used. And that was cut out. It's an homage to Blade Runner.
And all this is new as well. Battle sequences that Brad Martin, our second-unit director, shot. Again, just pacing, it was taken out. I actually miss these, because I think... There was a discussion about whether this was gonna confuse people... ...about who these people were, and were they the ones with Viktor... ...but it shows that there is a war going on... ...and it's not just, you know, Selene... ...and Michael and Kahn running about. And that you could afford some extras. - Yeah.
I did think I was gonna die that day. This day? The jump? The flip, yeah, because you left it to the second-to-last week of shooting. I thought that you'd done it on purpose in case I did die. Remember how close the camera actually was to me... ...and that doodad, what do you call it? And I had no idea that you were nearly as nervous as you were. I don't think I would have been if I hadn't felt it was purposely left... ...because I'd shot most of my stuff, and it didn't matter if I dropped dead. You always do that. As a safety, you put all your risky stuff at the end... ...IN case your actors die, of course. - I know. I'm on to you. I think you all learned that lesson. I practised that thing for so many months, and then what? Did we have four takes, that was it? It was a huge anticlimax. You were like, "I'm good." But it was great. I mean, you did it perfectly. Yeah, it was shocking. I expect you liked me whizzing about all day. Little things like this... - Hang on. Wasn't this when I shot the camera guy? Yes. - It was, right? You shot the matte box off the camera. - Yeah, oh, God. You said, "Don't fire," and I go, "Okay." But I was so used to the fact that I had been, I forgot. And you freaked them out from that point on. I was actually... Then, remember, the next day, the Steadicam operator and everybody... ...came in, like, full-blown, you know, hockey gear. He was very pink in the face after I did that. He was very... He got practically British about it. After that, he'd wear that welding mask. That was all because of you. That is actually true, isn't it?
This was kind of a last-minute.... Once things got going, the schedule kept getting tighter and tighter... ...and days were getting chopped, and locations changing and all that... ...we had to, almost on the spot, think of a way to get rid of Kahn. There was this elaborate scene that we storyboarded, just no time to shoot it... ...so I did a little bit of a jack-in-the-box little moment here. I like that it goes completely quiet too. Yeah, that was good. The sound guys over... We mixed this thing in Germany... ...and he showed it to me as an option, like: "What if we just take all the sound out?" It's cool, because when you're in the theatre, everything drops out. It almost sounds like the projector stops.
Who's that, Speedman? No, that's Shane. This is a mix between-- Oh, God. This whole shaft was... This was a set piece on the stage... ...and where Viktor was coming in was back at the actual location. This whole thing was split up between so many different locations.
I should've put... - There's an entrance. Put some grunts and groans in there.
That was the first day I'd actually seen the guys in the suits... ...and the guys operating the twiddle-y ears and whiskers. Yeah, you kind of jumped back a little bit. I couldn't believe it. I never... I loved it, when they got the control box, and they're making ears twitch... ... their ears twitch. They make a snarly face for the werewolf... ...and the guy who's doing it makes a snarly face. Oh, it's hilarious. - That was really funny.
God, this day.... Again, it was.... You guys were just cracking up the whole day. We had to actually look full in the face and kiss each other. This kiss is actually taken out of the original. Oh, yeah, that's right. And you put It back in. Michael does not look happy about that. It's quite a long kiss there. - Yeah. What's going on? - Don't you remember, you and I? Remember, we were just like, "Why is he leaving us here?" Why am I leaving you? I was behind the camera going, "Excuse me." Most directors will shout "Cut" when they're done. I was yelling "Cut" and doing the clap. - You were not. You just had the drool coming out of one side of your mouth. A lot of wandering about that was cut. Again, this isn't a director's cut, this is an extended cut. And a lot of the stuff, you can see why it was taken out. It was just like things like this. lt wasn't necessary at the end of the day. Essentially, a director's cut, the difference... An extended cut is basically a longer movie that the director says: "This has got nothing to do with me." Yes. I mean, there's stuff in here that I wanted to see back in... . like Scott's back-story and Singe's original reveal. But a lot of the stuff, I was glad to see it go. That's my favourite shot of a werewolf... ...that low-angle roar. I thought he looked the most like a real animal. Good old Bill. I mean, he really did so much of that stuff himself. Oh, yeah. That's like, when he stabs with the sword here... ...this look that he's got with the baring the fangs. No, when he was doing all the fighting... ... he'd never even done a stage fight in his life. And he was in that water for hours at the end. Oh, yeah. And he's, you know, going up against, you know, Scott. Scott and the stunt guys, and.... No, he hung in there. We just beat the shit out of him too. It was really.... He was just exhausted and was... Freezing in that water too. - Yeah, it was. But he never, you know, put his hands up and said: "It's just, you Know, it's too much." Everybody was pretty good like that. - Oh, they were all-- They were great.
That's enough. You're coming with me!
I hope I live to see Viktor choke the life from you! I bet you do. Remember, you had to sell me on this, on the "lies." You said, "All I should say right here is 'lies."" lt was some cheesy-ass line, wasn't it? I don't remember, but... - I think it was one of yours. And you said, "Look, I should just say, 'Lies."" And I thought that sounded so.... It had the potential of sounding like a Soap opera. But you'd read something or think of something in an American accent... ...then you'd hear it in an English accent and like it. Remember that? - Because I'm a fool. I would just, like, you know.... It's funny, because I think Americans find, you know, the British accent... ...the English accent, it's exotic. Sometimes it happens the other way. - Absolutely. I think everything sounds better in an American accent. lf there is an American accent. I don't have one. Of course you don't. - If you drop your accent, give it up... ... you will actually have an American accent. Because we're all Americans underneath. Thank you.
So be it. Like, this scene right here, this scared me... ...because it had the potential of being really corny... ...having somebody crawl across... - And grab your knee, yeah. I was really happy with that, how that whole thing... The blade coming out. Michael does his own stunt here. What I think is cool is Michael starts out looking so pathetic... ...that you think, "Oh, dear. Poor thing." And then you'd expect the nice thing to come out. That sand was cold. Do you remember they buried hot-water bottles under the sand--? Well, you had hot-water bottles all over. You had them stuffed in your costume. - Because I couldn't wear anything. Other people could wear a thermal vest... ...or an undershirt underneath. I couldn't. The girls always get screwed, I must say. So they were so cute. And there was a sandy place. Scott's got, like, three hot-water bottles under there, buried. And I've got one under my ass. And that's Ildiko's mouth, isn't it? - Yeah. Was I was doing Van Helsing by then? Yeah. That was during the reshoots. The first attempt that we did, we had this blood rig set up... ...and her mouth was blocking the tube. So it just built up in her mouth to where... ...when she actually opened her mouth, it just squirted out... ...and actually, like, hit the perms. It was pretty violent. I should have kept that. You don't mean anything to do with hair? No, it's a whole bladders conversation. Oh, is it? Okay. - Yeah, it goes in that whole file. No, the perms are the support beams and stuff on a stage. Okay. You could stop showing off, because It's nearly over.
I'm really happy with that. - That was great. But it hits him on the head, doesn't it? Not this shot, but there was one where he smacks his head... ...and he actually got a concussion, Mike did. I like him so much. Mike Gunther, right? Yeah, he was great. - He was sweet. This water is freezing cold, because we're on such a cold location... ...and this is a build within a location. And we couldn't heat the water. We tried. We heated up the water, and it would just steam. So it looked heated. It looked like, you know, a big Jacuzzi. Which I thought was okay. Let me put the jets on. And it just didn't look right, and so we had to actually keep it quite cold... ...to match the temperature in the place. So it was just freezing. And Scott, at the end, ends up, you know, being in there with no shirt. But he was quite... I mean, he literally never once said: "Oh, God. This is too cold." - No. I would be talking to him between takes, and he'd just be shaking. And teeth are chattering, no colour in his lips... ... Just the lip gloss, and he would stick with it. Was that his tongue we just saw? Because it looked very strange. No. - It was a creature... A CG. They laid it over.
I was very happy with this, between you guys. life I have granted you? The gift of immortality?
And the life of your daughter? Your own flesh and blood?
I remember it was actually quite a tense day on set... ...because we popped this on Bill the morning of. Remember? Because we stayed up... ... you Know, stayed up in the hotel, and we were all working on it... ...and as a result, it changed a lot of what Bill's dialogue was. And there was a lot of discussion about: "Go tell him we changed everything." "No, you tell him." No, because we generally made it better for both people. It was just not wanting to spring it on somebody. Absolutely, not wanting to say.... - He was totally cool. He liked it better, huh? - Yep.
I
did what was necessary to protect the species... ...
as I am forced to do yet again.
I really like those black eyes. You know, one thing we weren't actually able to shoot was... ...at one point, your arm was supposed to be dislocated... ...by getting smashed against that wall, and that's why you're not getting up. Didn't I have a funny leg at one point as well? Wasn't I supposed to have fallen down and gotten a funny leg? No, you just have a funny leg. I have a funny leg, Mr. Flat-Feet. I do not have flat feet. And you were gonna, like, you were gonna pull on your arm... ...and set it back in position... ... Just to show that that's why you're taking so long getting up. But wasn't I supposed to have the funny leg? Yes, and... - Just before, I'd got... There was a scene where... - ...a limp. ...a werewolf jumps out on you guys and swipes at you... ...and takes a big gash out of your leg. We got rid of it. - Yes, we did. And that's all his own spit, huh? - Right there, yeah. That's deeply impressive. Everybody thinks this is a wire that's not erased. That is not a wire that is not erased. I've seen that on the Internet. It's actually just a cable that's on the location. Does that bug you? - It bugs me. It actually can get to you. It shouldn't, but what are you gonna do? There's another thing on the Internet about: "There's wires that weren't taken out when they jumped down the shaft." Those were chains that were hanging behind it. You're so anal about things like that. You would never leave a wire dangling there. No way. It's just... It's just actually what happens. I used to go on those sites all the time before I was directing... Accusing other people of it. - Yeah. Karma.
Also, there's quite a bit that was changed at the ending as well. In the first draught, Selene actually doesn't... ...kind of save the day... ...Which you brought to our attention when we first met. It seemed a bit of a shame.
I mean, he will not die, this dude, huh? - No. This is my absolutely one favourite thing I did. This was great. I do wish we had more of this. I do too. I really do. Because that was something I had never done before, ever. One of the reasons you wanted to do something like this, right? Beat up some boys? No, I... Because I heard a lot of fight sequences got cut out of Serendipity. Yeah. - And.... I noticed I never got over that. No, this was my greatest achievement, the fight thing... ...because that was what I sucked at most when we started training. Like, I happened to be really good with guns right from the beginning... ...but I remember Brad's face when: "Okay, throw a couple punches. Let's see what we can do." He's going like, "Oh, Lord. Okay, don't tuck your thumb inside your hand like a girl." No, but they were quite impressed, and they were honest with me. They've been my friends for a while, so they would actually... They would give me their honest opinion. They were very happy with both you and Scott.
This is so nasty. I do worry about you sometimes. You know, it's so twisted. Freak. That gets such a... That gets a cheer, actually, in the theatre. That's great. And a sort of gasp of amazement.
This was the day when you got cross at us for laughing. Do you remember? - Yes, I do. I was-- We were running out of time. I know, but we were both terrified. When you're an actor laughing like that and can't stop, it's not fun at all. No, it's like being in high school. - It's desperate. "Oh, my God. Think of something terrible. Think of puppies dying or something." And then, when that makes you laugh, then you really start worrying. Yeah, you guys, you literally would not stop. Oh, I'm sorry. He had blue nipples, plenty eye makeup on.... You signed up for vampires and werewolves. I Know.
I think the least sort of amount of Speedman nudity... ...1n the second one, the better. For me, for me laughing. This is actually one of my favourite shots. I was really happy with how this turned out. I think it's just-- You look beautiful. I think it's just the whole mood of the whole thing. And you had already yelled at me about the laughing.
I was very nervous about how this was going to end too... ... because you try so hard to... You're trying to make it in a tone... ... that won't be, you know, too cheesy. And at the end of the day, I realise, "Wow, after all my hard work... ...['m still ending with a girl in a latex outfit and a man with no shirt." Tarzan. That's why we were laughing. It wasn't when he was in makeup... ... it was when he was out of it, like he'd been greased. All greased up. - That's what was making us giggle. I'm glad we stuck with no exchange of dialogue. It's always the hardest thing at the end of a movie... ...ecause what are you really going to say? Like, "God, that was tiring."
And here we are, setting up our sequel.
And what was that? That was makeup on him, or was that a dummy? That was him? - No, that's him. That's him with a prosthetic on and way too much blood. That is a lot. See, not red. That's quite black blood, isn't it?
Two Vampire elders have been slain... ... one by my own hand.
You know what? This seriously, truly, honestly... ...Wwas the best time I ever had on a movie, ever. It really was. I had such a good time.
Differences will be set aside. Allegiances will be made.
And soon... .../
will become the hunted.
I don't think I'm gonna have an experience like this again. I mean, it did feel like, you know, a family... ...and that it was a bit like making a student film... ...where everybody was really passionate. Everybody was. It was like everybody's first... It was my first time playing a part like that... ...and Speedman's, and Brad's first time stunt coordinating. Wasn't it? Yeah, and first time, I think, doing second-unit directing as well. lt was a first time for a lot of people. I think Bruton Jones, my production designer... ...who I had worked with on videos and commercials and things... ...fight there, had not done a feature. And, you know, it was Danny's first... Danny McBride's first screenplay. And it was the first time for a lot of people. It was really special, and it was really, really great. Thank you for being so nice then... ...and such an asshole now that you've gone all Hollywood on me. No, I had, really... Just the support and everything that I had from everybody.... And like I've told you, it's because when you have... ...from the actors and everybody... ...when they're trying to make the best project... ...and they're really as passionate as you... ... you can kind of just put yourself in this bubble with the actors... ...and it helps take away the stress and nightmares you're dealing with... ...with the studio and the schedule and all that stuff. And it was such a great help. Forrest. So everybody, thanks again... ...to all of the 12 of you who are listening to this track... ...and we will see you again. We'll probably see you on Easter... ...because that's probably Mom Wiseman, right? Yes. Thanks, guys. We'll see you again. - Bye.
